NITK Students Win National Aerospace Hackathon with Jet Engine "Digital Twin"


SURATHKAL: A four-member student team from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, bagged the top spot at Aerothon 2026, a prestigious national aerospace hackathon organized jointly by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and IIT Indore.


The team emerged victorious after outperforming over 640 teams and 2,300 registered participants from across the country. Following preliminary rounds, 20 finalist teams competed in an intense 24-hour hackathon held at the IIT Indore campus on August 7 and 8. The winning team was awarded a cash prize of ₹50,000.


The team comprised Omkar Kharade, Shubham Shah, and Maxon David Nazareth from the Mechanical Engineering department, alongside Diya Taneja from Electronics and Communication Engineering.


Addressing the problem statement "Physics-Informed Digital Twin for Real-Time Four-Stage Turbojet Health Monitoring," the students developed an advanced machine learning architecture. The system ingests real-time sensor data from turbojet engines to predict potential failure modes before they occur.


By enabling predictive maintenance, the solution aims to significantly improve flight safety while reducing turnaround times for engine manufacturers, maintenance providers, and commercial airlines.


Following their national success, the team announced plans to advance the project toward commercialization and is actively seeking mentorship and collaboration from aerospace industry experts and alumni.
