SURATHKAL: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, has officially rolled out an overhauled B.Tech curriculum for the incoming batch of 2026. Dubbed the "Bold and Balanced" curriculum, the revised academic framework significantly reduces total credit requirements while placing an unprecedented emphasis on practical learning and life-skills development.
Under the new model, theory and non-classroom practical credits are now virtually equalized. Because each practical credit requires double the weekly engagement hours of a standard classroom lecture, students will now spend approximately two-thirds of their total academic time outside traditional classrooms. This practical allocation encompasses laboratory work, life-skills training, industry internships, R&D projects, and business startup development.
Despite the reduction in core credits, the program retains high academic rigor by allowing interested students to pursue an additional Honours degree within their major discipline or a Minor degree in another department or interdisciplinary subject.
Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry
The structural shift follows three years of continuous deliberation with key corporate stakeholders and institute alumni.
"Industry leaders expect engineering graduates to possess a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge, hands-on skill, soft skills, and the right professional mindset," said Prof. Annappa, Dean of Academic Programs. "The revised framework gives students structured pathways to explore diverse career tracks, whether in corporate industry, research and development, or entrepreneurship."
Institutional Focus on Life-Skills Development
A cornerstone of the 2026 curriculum is the mandatory inclusion of Life-Skill Activities, designed to foster well-rounded personal development alongside technical competence. As explained by Prof. Govind Raj Mandela, Dean of Student Welfare, these activities are categorized into four distinct pillars covering physical sports, cultural creative arts, technical fabrication, and professional communication. Guided by expert coaches, every student will dedicate a minimum of two hours per week to each of the four areas.
Operational Scale and Early Student Response
Executing the program for a batch size exceeding 1,100 students required extensive logistical preparation. Associate Dean of Sports Dr. Nagendrappa H. confirmed that each activity is spearheaded by a designated faculty coordinator alongside professional coaching staff to ensure seamless execution. Associate Dean of Life-Skills Dr. Geetha V. highlighted the early positive impact on campus morale, noting high levels of student engagement and enthusiasm during initial outdoor and team-building sessions.
Preparing Engineers for the AI Era
The curriculum overhaul aligns with broader national educational goals and the changing landscape of global technology, particularly the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence.
NITK Director Prof. B. Ravi framed the reform as a critical evolution in higher education, stating that the institute aims to prepare students for the AI Era—a period where pure technical knowledge will increasingly be complemented by human values such as curiosity, creativity, intuition, empathy, ethics, and critical judgment. He expressed confidence that this curriculum will produce well-rounded individuals and resilient professionals capable of driving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
