NITK Faculty Project Anchors India–Australia Collaboration Worth AUD 16 Million at 3rd AIESC Meeting

Mangaluru, December 15, 2025:  The 3rd meeting of the Australia–India Education and Skills Council (AIESC) was held on December 8, 2025 in New Delhi, co-chaired by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Minister of Education, along with Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, and Minister of State, Ministry of Education, and Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, from the Indian side; together with The Hon Julian Hill MP, Assistant Minister for International Education, The Hon Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education, and The Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Skills and Training, Government of Australia.

The Council reviewed progress across school education, higher education and research, as well as skills, training, and workforce development. Discussions focused on strengthening institutional linkages, expanding mobility pathways, and enhancing regulatory cooperation.

A key highlight was the announcement of 10 new SPARC-funded India–Australia collaborative research projects in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, quantum technologies, biodiversity, MedTech, sustainability, smart mobility, and space. A total of INR 9.84 crores (AUD 1.64 million) has been sanctioned for these projects. With this, out of a total of 865 projects, 129 are with top Australian universities, with a combined financial value of 16 million AUD.

On this occasion, Dr. Sourav Kanti Addya, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal, was honoured for his SPARC project titled “SmartX: Predictive Edge Intelligence for Urban Traffic Flow”. The project, sanctioned with a total funding of INR 1,19,25,000/- for a duration of two years, focuses on intelligent traffic management solutions through predictive edge computing.

About the Project:

India’s urban roads are under immense pressure due to unprecedented vehicle growth, leading to congested intersections and frequent accidents that pose daily risks to millions of commuters. Unsafe driving behaviours—such as sudden braking, lane cutting, and erratic overtaking—combined with outdated traffic infrastructure, have amplified the crisis. To address this challenge, the SmartX project proposes a transformative Vehicle Trajectory Prediction framework that reimagines traffic management at signalised intersections.

The project is led in collaboration with Prof. Salil Kanhere, University of New South Wales, Sydney as Principal Investigator from the Australian side, with Dr. Sandip Chakraborty, Associate Professor, IIT Kharagpur, and Dr. Kanchana Thilakarathna, University of Sydney, serving as Co-Principal Investigators.

Dr. Addya received the sanction letter and plaque from Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and Hon Jason Clare MP during the ceremony.
