SPICMACAY VIRASAT’26 Opens at NITK Surathkal


Surathkal, Feb. 5: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, is hosting SPICMACAY VIRASAT’26, a five-day festival celebrating India’s classical music, dance, and traditional art forms, from February 4 to 8, 2026, at the Silver Jubilee Auditorium. All programmes are open to the public.


The festival commenced on February 4 with an inaugural ceremony followed by a Hindustani vocal concert by Padma Shri awardee Pandit M. Venkatesh Kumar, whose performance marked an evocative beginning to the cultural series.


The inaugural function was attended by Shri Raghavendra S. Bhat, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank Ltd., as Chief Guest, while Pandit M. Venkatesh Kumar was the Special Guest. The programme was presided over by Prof. Subhash C. Yaragal, Deputy Director, NITK, in the presence of Prof. Govinda Raj M, Dean of Students’ Welfare.


As part of the evening concert series held daily at 6 p.m., the festival features eminent artistes from across the country. On February 5, Sangeetha Kalanidhi awardee Vidwan R. K. Shriram Kumar will present a Carnatic violin concert, accompanied by Vidwan Manoj Siva on the mridangam and Vidwan Anirudh Athreya on the kanjira.


On February 6, Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee Vidwan Praveen Kumar will present a Bharatanatyam recital. The performance will be accompanied by Vidushi Smruthi Bhaskar (vocal), Vidwan Vidya Shakar (mridangam), Vidwan Raghu Simha (flute), and Vidwan Jagadhishwar Sukumaran (nattuvangam).


The festival continues on February 7 with a Carnatic vocal concert by Sangeetha Kalanidhi awardee Vidushi Dr. S. Sowmya, accompanied by Vidwan Embar Kannan on violin, Vidwan Neyveli Narayanan on mridangam, and Vidwan Payyannur Govinda Prasad on morsing.


The concluding programme on February 8 will feature a Kuchipudi performance by Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Vidushi Vyjayanti Kashi, accompanied by Vidwan Vinay Manya (vocal), Vidwan Nitish K (flute), Vidwan Pruthvi Krishna (mridangam), and Vidushi Pratiksha Kashi (nattuvangam).


In addition to the evening performances, daytime workshops are being conducted for school and college students in Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Carnatic vocal music, and traditional Cheriyal art forms, including scroll painting and sawdust mask making.


Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Govinda Raj M said that VIRASAT aims to revive India’s cultural heritage and make classical art forms accessible to people of all age groups, including students and the wider community.


The festival is organised by SPICMACAY NITK, a student-led initiative under the Mangalore Chapter of SPICMACAY, with the support of the NITK administration.
