St Philomena College (Autonomous) Observes Martyrs’ Day

Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Freedom Fighters




Puttur: St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur Observes Martyrs’ Day on January 30 at the Spandana Hall of the college to honour Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the nation. The programme was organised to commemorate the martyrdom of the Father of the Nation and to instil among students the enduring values of truth, non-violence and patriotism.


The programme commenced with the offering of floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, followed by a prayer led by Avani and Aparna. A moment of silence was observed in reverence to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom.


Rev Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of the college, presided over the programme as President. In his address, he underscored the relevance of Gandhian ideals in contemporary society and urged students to contribute meaningfully to nation-building by being responsible citizens and working earnestly for the country’s progress. Vice Principal Dr Vijaykumar Moleyar also graced the occasion and shared his reflections on the significance of Martyrs’ Day.


The keynote address was delivered by Ms Sridevi N, I MSc Mathematics, who presented a thoughtful comparison between India in the immediate post-independence era and present-day India. She highlighted the challenges faced by the nation in its formative years and contrasted them with the opportunities and responsibilities of an independent country today. Emphasising the value of freedom, she called upon students to actively participate in national development.


Dr Vinayachandra, Registrar (Evaluation), and Mrs Spearl Fiona Pereira, Student Welfare Officer, were present on the occasion. The programme began with a welcome address by Yusuf Alfaz, Student Council Secretary, and concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Hiba Sheik, Joint Secretary. The event was compered by Muzammil I, Student Council President.
