Mangaluru: St Aloysius University, Mangaluru, organised SWARAANJALI, an enchanting choral and orchestral concert, on Sunday, 1 February 2026, at 5.00 p.m. in the L. F. Rasquinha Hall of the University.
Rev. Fr Melwin Joseph Pinto, SJ, Pro-Chancellor of St Aloysius University and Rector of St Aloysius Institutions, graced the occasion. Directors of various blocks, Deans, teaching and non-teaching staff, along with students of the University, enthusiastically participated in the musical extravaganza.
Seven teams from Mangaluru, along with two soloists, presented a captivating blend of sacred hymns and classical melodies enriched with contemporary harmonies. The participating choirs and orchestras included Balmatta Musical Association (BMA), St Joseph’s Interdiocesan Seminary, CSI Young Voices, Asha Kiran Jesuit Scholastics, NEPAM, St Aloysius PU College, and the St Aloysius University Choir and Orchestra. The soloists were Ms Ananya Abigail D’Silva, a student of St Aloysius PU College, and Ms Rachel Priyanka Furtado, a proud alumna of the University.
The St Aloysius University Choir and Orchestra opened the concert with When You Believe (Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston), seamlessly connecting the spiritual with the contemporary. Asha Kiran Jesuit Scholastics followed with Una Paloma Blanca (George Baker), The Impossible Dream (Mitch Leigh), and Alpha and Omega (Gaither Vocal Band).
The CSI Young Voices Choir, comprising young singers from various CSI churches in Mangaluru, presented Now Thank We All Our God (J.S. Bach/Catherine Winkworth), El Cielo Canta Alegria! (Pablo Sosa/Roger Bergs), and El Vito (Emily Crocker). This was followed by a soulful solo performance by Ms Ananya Abigail D’Silva, who rendered Grâce Infinie (French rendition of Amazing Grace by John Newton) and Hallelujah (The Isaacs).
St Joseph’s Interdiocesan Seminary Choir presented Nome Dolcissimo (Castelli and Ruggeri), Ndikhokhele Bawo (Lente Mari Pitout), and Mbube (Solomon Linda). The St Aloysius University Choir then returned with an energetic ABBA Medley. The Balmatta Musical Association Orchestra performed Pass It On (Kurt Kaiser), followed by the St Aloysius PU College Team, which presented A Million Dreams (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) and Be a Light (Thomas Rhett).
During the programme, the Music Directors of all participating teams were felicitated by Rev. Fr Melwin J. Pinto, SJ, and Rev. Dr Melwyn D’Cunha, SJ, Pro-Vice Chancellor of St Aloysius University.
Post-felicitation, the Balmatta Musical Association Choir presented We Will Rejoice (Caleb Simper), God Is Still on His Throne (Kittie L. Suffield), and Glory in the Highest (chorus from Handel’s Messiah, 1741). The NEPAM Choir showcased Northeastern Chimes in Paite and Tangkhul languages. The St Aloysius University Choir enthralled the audience with a QUEEN Medley, after which Ms Rachel Priyanka Furtado delivered a powerful rendition of Let It Go (Idina Menzel).
The Balmatta Musical Association Orchestra performed He’s Everything to Me (Ralph Carmichael), and the concert concluded with a congregational hymn, Nearer, My God, to Thee (Sarah Flower Adams / Lowell Mason).
The programme was meticulously compered by Mr Samson Peters and Ms Faye Rodrigues. Dr Charles V. Furtado, Convenor of Swaraanjali and President of BMA, proposed the vote of thanks.
The concert was successfully organised under the leadership of Dr Charles V. Furtado (Convenor), Dr Roshan F. D’Souza and Ms Jyothi S. Vaz (Staff Coordinators), and Ms Reina Sequeira and Mr Anshul D’Souza (Student Coordinators).
