Mangaluru: The February month cleanliness drive of Ramakrishna Mission – Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan was formally flagged off at Kankanady Old Road by Fr. George Jeevan Sequera, Administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, and Anil Kumar S. Bhoomreddi, Additional Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada. On this occasion, Joseph, owner of Lilia Arched, and Dr. Sheshappa Amin were also present and encouraged the volunteers.
Addressing the gathering, Fr. George Jeevan Sequera emphasized that ‘even educated people often forget simple responsibilities like avoiding plastic. He noted that plastic reduction is rarely practiced seriously and that continuous awareness among all sections of society is essential. He appreciated the Ramakrishna Mission for taking up this meaningful initiative and sustaining public consciousness towards cleanliness.’
Speaking on the occasion, Anil Kumar S. Bhoomreddi described ‘Swacch Mangaluru as a beautiful and value-based concept rooted in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—one world, one family. He drew a parallel between keeping one’s home clean and maintaining the city, stating that just as we do not litter our homes, we should not litter our city. He reminded that nature gives everything to humanity and questioned why we hesitate to give back to Mother Nature, urging youth to actively participate in such initiatives.’
As part of the Shramadan activities, Dr. Dhanesh Kumar, Principal of Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy, along with Dr. Jayesh Chandran, Dr. Rakesh Krishna, Dr. Arun Varghese, Mr. Socrate and their students, cleaned the upper road connecting Father Muller’s Hospital. Large quantities of plastic waste were removed, overgrown plants were trimmed, and unauthorized banners were cleared.
Simultaneously, another team of senior volunteers—Uday KP, Taranath Alva, Rajivi Chandrashekara, Vasanthi Nayak, Babita Shetty, Naithik Shetty, Kamalaksha Pai, Balakrishna Bhat, Gopinath Rao, Anirudh Naik, Prof. Prakesh, Shreeharsha, and Bhavith Salian—carried out an intensive cleanliness drive on the lower road connecting Pumpwell. The team removed large quantities of plastic waste, cleared fallen tree branches, and courageously entered the drainage lines to extract plastics accumulated over time. Their efforts were strongly supported by students of St. Joseph Engineering College—Keerthan, Ranjan Likith, Vivek, Ujwal, Tarun, Theja, and Shreyas—who actively participated and contributed with great enthusiasm to the cleaning activity.
The public is encouraged to participate as volunteers in this monthly cleanliness drive. The initiative is organized in association with Swacch Mangaluru Prathishtana and supported by MRPL and ONGC as part of their environmental social responsibility.
CLEARING BLACKSPOTS
In a focused effort to clear blackspots, three major garbage blackspots on Kankanady Old Road were addressed by senior volunteers Dilraj Alva, Sandeep Garodi, Prakash Garodi, Sachin Shetty, Sauraj Mangaluru, Yogish Karyatadk, Nagesh, and Padmanabha Salin. Through dedicated effort, more than 1500 kilograms of waste were recovered. The team also created awareness among nearby apartment residents, motivating them to take ownership of keeping their premises clean.
